IBRO-APRC announces three new Laboratory Exchange Fellows
Three young neuroscientists from the Asia-Pacific region – Atish Prakash, Mehdi Sadegh and Mohd Farooq Shaikh – will receive funding to spend up to six months abroad in an established laboratory in the region to broaden the scope of their scientific training.

IBRO Young Investigators publish article in BioEssays
An article by Jitendra Kumar Sinha, Shampa Ghosh and Manchala Raghunath will appear in the January 2012 edition of BioEssays, summarizing the experience of those who benefitted from the Young Investigators Programme this summer in connection with the IBRO World Congress of Neuroscience in Florence, Italy, and calling for future initiatives of this kind.

APRC: RIKEN BSI Summer Program 2012

With partial financial support from the IBRO APRC, the RIKEN Brain Science Institute (RIKEN BSI) is offering a summer program to train advanced students interested in brain function, who may attend either a two-month laboratory internship or an intensive 7-day lecture course. The application deadline for both is February 29, 2012.

Selangor, Malaysia. "Functional Genomics, Molecular Morphology, Behavioural Neuroscience and Neuroimaging" were the subjects of the latest IBRO School in Malaysia. The 35 students also had the opportunity to visit local institutes to learn various techniques based on their interests.

Seoul, Korea. The summer school was designed to allow graduate students and postdocs to explore the latest techniques in systems neuroscience, including EEG recording, in vivo single unit recording, deep brain stimulation, optogenetics, transgene delivery and functional imaging of brain activity.

Sten Grillner elected as IBRO’s next Secretary-General

The IBRO Governing Council has just elected its next Secretary-General: Sten Grillner, Professor and Director of the Nobel Institute for Neurophysiology, Department of Neuroscience, at the Karolinska Institutet in Stockholm, Sweden. Professor Grillner will serve as IBRO’s Secretary-General Elect in 2012, and will begin his three-year term as IBRO Secretary-General in 2013.

IBRO's Asia-Pacific Regional Committee elects new chair

Professor Tadaharu Tsumoto has been elected by the IBRO Asia-Pacific Regional Committee (APRC) as its new chair, taking over for Prof. Hitoshi Okamoto, whose term in office officially ended in 2010.

IBRO Member wins 2010 L’ORÉAL-UNESCO Life Sciences Award

Lourdes Cruz is named as one of the five exceptional women scientists from around the world to receive the Award in the Life Sciences by the L’ORÉAL-UNESCO For Women in Science partnership. Dr Cruz has served on the IBRO Symposia & Workshops Committee. Interview.
